Linda Shearwin-Whyatt
I have been involved in teaching and research in the area of molecular biology over my career. My research has focussed on the identification of genes, and their functional characterisation, using bioinformatic, molecular and synthetic biology techniques. Currently in the Laboratory of Comparative Genome Biology, University of Adelaide, my research centres on molecular analysis of monotremes: egg-laying mammals which diverged 188 million years ago from all other mammals. The platypus and echidna are the only living representatives of this group and as such provide a unique window into mammalian evolution. I study the chromosomes and genes involved in monotreme sexual development and fertility and the impacts of environmental endocrine disruptors on these essential processes. This basic research supports conservation of these much-loved Australian mammals.
